Eyes. Gender.

It’s like having a pair of eyes but deliberately keeping one eye tight shut and using the other to see.

Given that both eyes are of equal quality, keeping one shut will not prevent the other from seeing around. The open eye will ably visualise things around, send visionary signals to the brain to form perceptions.

No doubt, a garden will appear as is with one open eye. But when both eyes are open, that same garden will appear different so subtle that it is almost impossible to describe out loud. The mind, however, will realise that distinction, and allow for a more positive, enriched viewing experience.

This is why despite a single capable eye, there are two. It’s not just about what we see but how we see, and what we can possibly feel to that sight.

Similarly the human species is not limited to one sole gender; there are gender that people identify with beside “male”. However, this world has more to do with male, referred interchangeably as men, while there is great lack of touch unto this planet by gender other than men.

From the founders of everyday apps and programs (Microsoft, Google and Facebook), to inventors of communication (electricity, telephone, internet), to historical figures (sailors, missionaries, explorers), to conquerors (moon landing, climbing Mt Everest), to athletic record breakers, to privileged jobs with higher status and pay (Diplomat roles, ‘chief’ titled roles, executive roles) : men.

Men are overrepresented in these social achievements is partial issue. The more serious problem is that the world today has evolved into societies, surroundings, socio-political contexts that recognise gendered achievements, or suppress those of belonging to other gender. Either way, there is no diversity – there is only one eye to and of this world. Potential is limited because diversity suffers. Everything that is visible is via gendered lens. Good, bad, evil, deviance, values and philosophies, is exclusive of contributions by other gender. Not all gender, despite being a part of it, represent today’s societies.

And this proves that there is more, to and of, this planet. Societies have not yet been witnessed in its entirety. There is still a better, more enriching picture to be seen.
